Visit to Raigad

After yesterday’s visit to Pune, I headed to a small town called Pen in Raigad district. The town is home to the five children that have been selected by CASP, based on recommendations from schools and social workers, to receive the first five AppVidya tablets. The students, four girls and one boy, were in grades 6-9 and were all students who attended school but felt like they could, and would be willing to, benefit more from a supplemental education. After meeting with the students and some of their parents, we unboxed the tablets together. I gave a quick demonstration of how to use them, and then proceeded to help them one-on-one as they had a chance to use their new tablets. After solving issues, answering all questions, and setting all the tablets up, I explained that both myself and a BYJU’s employee will be available over the phone to answer any questions and concerns. I also spoke to the students about how I suggest they use their tablets in the most effective manner. The students were extremely happy to use the tablets and quickly understood most of the operations needed to use them. Since they do not have WiFi at home, I used the office’s WiFi to prepare the tablets to be as functional as possible when they bring them home. Seeing the smiles on the students’ faces was a very rewarding experience, and I hope to be able to do the same thing again with even more students.

After this and a quick lunch with the CASP team, we headed to a village nearby where many of the students supported by CASP as well as some of the students who just received tablets live. We were welcomed by the village and I received a traditional welcome consisting of a ritual called Aarti. I saw their house, a cosy and small one-bedroom home with a kitchen, among the slums of Raigad. We spoke about each others’ lives and the students’ schools. It was a very humbling and rewarding experience to meet all of these families, and I hope to see them again soon.
